Note: As of January 1, 2016, Guardian was rebranded as Sortis Capital. Prior articles refer to the firm under its former name.
This week, leading industry publication American Banker featured the work of Guardian in an excellent article summarizing the economic rebound that some commercial real estate lending institutions are beginning to experience across the nation. As Guardian Founder and CEO Paul Brenneke pointed out in the article, “There's 30% to 40% still left that are still lingering just a little bit under water … Some have equity but not enough to refinance.”
Starting in 2012, Guardian began assisting Oregon-based community bank MBank, leading to a dramatic turnaround for the company. American Banker explains that now-CEO of MBank Jef Baker “called on Guardian to help locate buyers from around the country. The vigorous effort that followed to dispose of troubled assets allowed MBank to reduce its overall loan portfolio from $230 million to $125 million, even as it has made new CRE loans.” MBank, like many other institutions that Guardian has helped, experienced an accelerated recovery, and now ranks close to the top of its peer group – a healthy position as the market heads into a rebound.
